My interpretation is that the "Superkernels" are sentient giant pieces of popcorn, as shown in the drawing. Not significantly less plausible than some other comic-book disbelief-suspensions.

Compared to real popcorn pieces, though, they seem to have suffered the application of a smoothing kernel.
